Learn how to make great use of common notes to smooth out chord progressions
In this Gibson App video, Irene Ketikidi guides you through a common chord progression: the G-D-Em-C sequence. This progression is ubiquitous in popular music and forms the basis of countless pop songs such as “Let It Be” by The Beatles, where it appears in the key of C major, as an C-G-Am-F sequence.
Here, in G, it shares a fingering concept with “Wonderwall” by Oasis, because you’ll plant your ring and pinky finger for the whole progression, though that song is in F# minor (more or less), played as if in E minor with a capo on the second fret.
It is versatile yet simple, providing an excellent foundation for beginner to intermediate players. By adding a few effective techniques and creative rhythms, you’ll learn to make this progression sound richer and more engaging.
The lesson focuses on maintaining the third and fourth fingers on the fretboard, a technique that allows you to introduce variations like Dsus4 and Em7 effortlessly. These variations bring subtle shifts to the chord voicings, adding depth and color to your sound. Ketikidi describes these as “common notes”—shared notes between chords that flow well together.
For example, when playing G to D, you can leave your ring and pinky fingers in place on the third fret of the B and high E strings, creating a smooth transition with a consistent tonal anchor. As you move to Em7, simply adjust the other fingers while keeping those anchored, creating a more melodic and harmonious flow between chords. Of course, if you’re a beginner, some of this may still cause some initial discomfort as your ability to stretch and hold the strings down for clear note expression grows.
This approach improves the fluidity of your transitions and creates a fuller sound due to the sustained notes in your chord voicings. Ketikidi breaks down each chord shape, explores strumming patterns suited to this progression, and provides practice tips to solidify these techniques in your muscle memory. Whether playing around a campfire or recording a song, mastering these voicings will elevate your playing and make your chord progressions sound more fluid and accomplished.
