Video: Molly Miller teaches the Jason Mraz “Might As Well Dance” guitar riff on Gibson TV’s Riff Lords

Master the riff that elevates “Might As Well Dance”

In a recent episode of Gibson TV’s Riff Lords, acclaimed guitarist Dr. Molly Miller joined the show to break down her memorable riff from the Jason Mraz song “Might As Well Dance.” The riff, which appears around the 1:56 mark in the track, is a catchy blend of country, blues, and funk that gives the song an extra layer of energy and style.

Miller explains her approach, saying, “So, I’m messing around with just a handful of notes to create a phrase, and I’m messing around with rhythms. I’m not playing it rhythmically the same way each time, but changing up the rhythm while playing the same notes to create a riff.”

Miller, a versatile musician and longtime collaborator with Mraz, walks viewers through the riff in a detailed and engaging guitar lesson. She shares insights on the “country funk” style of the figure, based around a G7 chord, and breaks down its timing and nuances, making it accessible even for less advanced guitarists. By the end of the lesson, you’ll be ready to grab an electric guitar and play along with confidence.

This instructional segment highlights Miller’s expertise not only as a performer but also as a teacher. She’s been the chair of the Guitar Department at Los Angeles College of Music since 2016. Her unique style and teaching methods have made her one of the most sought-after guitarists in Los Angeles, both on tour and in the studio.
